An Intimate Backyard Wedding in Phillipsburg, NJ
Thirty guests, a backyard in Jersey, and one completely unplanned fireworks show mid-reception — the kind of wedding day that doesn't need a plan.
An Intimate Backyard Wedding in Phillipsburg, NJ
Some weddings sprawl. Some fill ballrooms and hire coordinators and run on a spreadsheet. Anahy and Keytel's was the other kind. Their whole celebration fit into a backyard in Phillipsburg — thirty of the people they loved most, a table set under lights, and no plan more complicated than "let's actually enjoy this."
No Venue, Just Home
There's a particular kind of quiet magic to a wedding held at home. The morning isn't chaotic. Nobody's rushing through a rental contract's timeline. The couple gets ready in rooms they've been getting ready in for years. The bride walks down what is, in the strictest sense, a driveway — and it becomes something else entirely because everyone who loves her is standing on either side of it.
Anahy and Keytel chose their home for the wedding because it's theirs. That decision showed up in every frame — nothing about the day felt performed for the camera, because nothing about it was performed at all.
An Intimate Guest List
There were about thirty guests. Roughly the number of people who genuinely love and know you. Weddings this size have a different kind of energy — closer, warmer, less structured. Every hug is a real hug. Every toast is from someone who has actually been through something with you.
I love shooting intimate weddings for exactly this reason: nobody's a stranger in the frame.
And Then the Fireworks
Halfway through the reception, without warning, the sky lit up.
Nobody had planned it. Nobody had booked it. Somewhere within earshot of Phillipsburg, someone else was throwing a party — and the timing was, frankly, miraculous. Anahy and Keytel turned toward the light and the whole yard followed. I have never worked so fast in my life.
Some of the best photographs of the night came from those five minutes. Not because they were technically perfect — because everyone in them was completely, unmistakably present.
The Point
You don't need a venue. You don't need a big guest list. You don't need a coordinator with a headset. If you have thirty people who love you, a place that feels like yours, and the willingness to let the day be what it wants to be — you already have the wedding.
The fireworks are optional. But they're nice.
